IFSP conducted a baseline survey on health and nutrition in late 1999. This was the first survey of its kind in the north and east for almost 20 year. 515 households in 20 villages in 5 DS Divisions were covered. The survey included anthropometric data, health and nutrition related behaviour and the socio-economic situation in war affected villages. The results of the survey are alarming. Underweight, wasting and stunting and overall malnutrition are far beyond what would be acceptable compared to national averages and international standards. Stunting and wasting are clear indicators of war affectedness and poverty. Children and women are seriously affected. IFSP has been active in counterbalancing malnutrition with a number of initiatives focusing on health, hygiene, school feeding and developing the production infrastructure. IFSP has been active in improving the livelihoods of the village communities.
