75 Minor Tank Development Programme

IFSP
Trincomalee, May 2002

A programme to develop 75 village irrigation scheme (minor tanks) has been implemented since mid 1999 with substantial physical and financial support from German and Sri Lankan funds. The minor tank is the backbone of the village rice economy. In Trincomalee district out of a total of 400 minor tanks about 200 are in need of development. Village irrigation schemes were either abandoned due to the war or as a result of negative economics. The IFSP 75 minor tank development programme contributes significantly to household and village food security. All development work is done by farmer’s organisations. The process of mobilisation for a higher degree of ownership is time consuming. All tanks were inventoried and mapped (1:25,000). To date 50 minor tanks are in various stages of development or were handed over to the village communities. Altogether an amount of Rs. >40 million (UST$ 500) was spent.
