North Eastern Coastal Sand Aquifer in Trincomalee District

Colombo, May 2002

A comprehensive hydrogeological survey along the north eastern coast was carried out to estimate the safe yield of the coastal sand aquifer. This aquifer is located between the sea and inland lagoons. It receives recharge from the monsoon rains, October to December and from seasonal rains in April and June/July. Due to excessive pumping and fertiliser application the coastal aquifer is under threat. The water quality is deteriorating fast. Though the safe yield of the coastal aquifer is at present estimated at double the annual recharge the ever increasing abstraction of water for irrigation and domestic use will soon call for an hydrologically sound water management.
