Well Inventory in the Nilaveli - Kuchchaveli Area

K. Nadarajah
Trincomalee and Colombo, May 2002

The well inventory north of Trincomalee town addressed agro-wells and drinking water wells. Of an estimated total of >3,000 wells, 2,060 wells were inventoried according to location, age, size and use. 90% of the wells are in use for irrigation or domestic purposes. 70% of the recorded wells are >10 years old. The anticipated peace combined with a large number of returning internally displaced persons to the area and the increasing intensity of onion cultivation sees many new wells constructed. The introduction of a licensing and regulation system for wells to protect the aquifer is recommend. Water saving and the cultivation of diversified cropping need to be promoted.
