C. R. Panabokke, S. R. K. Pathirana Trincomalee and Colombo, May 2002
IFSP is supporting water supply (common wells and individual wells, pipe born water) and sanitation (toilets and hygiene awareness and education) in a large number of villages. The context is the promotion of health and nutrition at village level. Since early 2001 the water from wells in the north eastern coastal area of Trincomalee is monitored for quality and quantity. 44 test wells are established where water samples are taken in two weekly intervals. Test results reveal a high nitrate content due to the high application of organic and chemical fertiliser. In certain locations the water is unfit for human consumption. The monsoon rains have a certain leaching effect, however, since the water extraction increases, pipe born water supply needs to be established within the next five years.
