Show for improved hygiene
The Integrated Food Security Programme Trincomalee (IFSP) assists village communities in the construction of toilets and wells. The aim is to reduce the high prevalence of communicable diseases such as diarrhoea through the availability of safe drinking water and improved hygiene. The construction of toilets and wells is a participatory process and communities contribute through the provision of labour and material. Awareness activities on healthy behaviour conducted by Public Health Inspectors complement these efforts.
An in-depth awareness campaign helps to sustain the proper use and maintenance of the constructed toilets and wells.
The drama performance is an effective tool to encourage behaviour change. It allows the transmission of messages in a simple way and easy to understand. At the same time, the show is entertaining and villagers can easily identify themselves with the performing characters. Moreover, the performance ensures that information is spread to a wide range of people since the drama is an enjoyable cultural event for all. The show stimulates discussion and encourages communities in adapting good behaviour.
- The play on toilets and wells addressed the following topics: Importance of toilets and wells in relation to hygiene and health (including means of transmission!)
- Proper use and maintenance
- General messages on good hygienic behaviour
- Involvement of the Public Health Inspector in hygiene and sanitation activities
- The performance was presented by members of the Women´s Development Society of the Trincomalee District Youth Development AHAM (TDYDA).
IFSP, in collaboration with AHAM, recently developed and conducted a drama on the importance and the concept of the mid-day meal (news 21). So far the show could only be implemented in Tamil speaking communities. Students of Gomarankadawela Maha Vidyalaya have taken up the initiative and perform the show in Sinhala.

Drawing competition
IFSP supported the Rotaract Club Trincomalee in conducting a drawing competition amongst school children of Eachchilampattai and Muthur DS Division on the topic "living a healthy life". The aim was to stimulate discussion on how to improve health. Prizes included bicycles, school bags and books. The school of the first prize winner received support for constructing latrines and equipment for establishing a school garden. Each participating student received a mango tree to be planted in his or her home garden.
GIS training at Colombo University
IFSP has sponsored an intensive 10-days training course, which was conducted by the Department of Geography of Colombo University. 20 participants from the eight District Planning Secretariats NEP, officers from the Department of Agrarian Development, Provincial Planning Secretariat and IFSP obtained first hand information and knowledge in the application of computer based geographic information systems (GIS). GIS is a powerful tool for planning.
German - Sri Lankan football match
A ladies football team from Germany visited Trincomalee for a friendly match with the first ever-established ladies team from the Trincomalee Football League. This was the first time in 20 years that a foreign football team played in Trincomalee. IFSP-GTZ assisted the Trincomalee Football League in making the stay a memorable event.
